Learn how to format your manuscripts professionally using Belbri's comprehensive formatting tools.
Apply bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, and other text styles using the formatting toolbar or keyboard shortcuts. Select text and choose your desired style.
Use heading styles (H1, H2, H3, H4) to structure your manuscript. Headings help create a table of contents and improve navigation. H1 is typically for chapter titles, H2 for sections, and H3 for subsections.
Align text left, center, right, or justify. Most manuscripts use left alignment, but center alignment can be useful for titles or special sections.
Adjust line spacing (single, 1.5, double) to improve readability. Most manuscripts use double spacing for submissions, but you can customize based on your needs.
Control spacing before and after paragraphs. Use consistent spacing throughout your manuscript for a professional appearance.
Set paragraph indentation for first lines or hanging indents. Standard manuscript format typically uses first-line indentation of 0.5 inches.
Create bulleted lists for items that don't need to be in a specific order. Use the bullet button in the toolbar or start a line with an asterisk (*) or hyphen (-).
Create numbered lists for sequential items or steps. The numbering updates automatically as you add or remove items.
Create sub-lists by indenting list items. Use Tab to indent and create nested bullet or numbered lists.
Standard manuscript format includes: 12pt Times New Roman or Courier font, double spacing, 1-inch margins, page numbers, and a title page. Use the "Manuscript Format" template for automatic formatting.
Format dialogue with proper quotation marks and paragraph breaks. Each speaker's dialogue should start on a new paragraph.
Use scene breaks (three asterisks *** or a horizontal rule) to separate scenes within chapters. Scene breaks help readers understand transitions in time or location.
Belbri includes pre-formatted templates for common manuscript types:
Maintain consistent formatting throughout your manuscript. Use styles rather than manual formatting to ensure consistency.
Different publishers and agents may have specific formatting requirements. Always check their guidelines before submitting.
Apply heading and paragraph styles rather than manually formatting text. This makes it easier to update formatting globally and ensures consistency.
